Poetry to Ponder

Sometimes a poem can distract us from the sober business of life, and often give us a different perspective.  I wrote CARNIVAL about 3 years ago in one of my lighter moments.  I am much too serious most of the time, and sometimes we just need something light and airy.  CARNIVAL is just that.

The second poem, HAPPINESS, is a discourse on all the beauty I have found in life and a hope that you too will find the same happiness.  It takes all types of happiness to make a world.  If you like them, feel free to comment.  I love hearing from folks!  ENJOY!

              CARNIVAL

Life is a carnival, tried and true,
It makes silly clowns of me and you.

We ride all the rides, and eat so much food
throw caution to the wind if we're in the mood.

When the fun day is over, we look to the skies,
and see all the stars, it's no surprise.

I wonder what manner of God He can be,
when He gave it all up for clowns like we.

The light show continues, through the hours of
          the night

And the sun that is rising, put's worries to flight!

         Carnival....enjoy it!

                   HAPPINESS

My life is full, like a red, red rose
Just how it happens I don't know.

I ponder it often, a secret to find
perhaps its the people who've been so kind.

Perhaps its the robin in the distant trees,
Perhaps its our pet, asleep on my knees.

It could be the grandkids who are so sweet,
or even the slippers upon tired feet.

Whatever the reason I hope you find, a life
full of happiness and peace devine.

Smell all the roses, so lovely & sweet,
greet all the people you happen to meet.

Gaze at the sunsets so warm in the sky,
ponder the Blue Jay as he flies by.

There's so much to enjoy, and so much
         to see,

The beauty of life, the waves of the sea.

Life is a treasure and I hope you find,
         a life full of meaning,

         A path that is kind.

General Store

I have decided to make this site more of a General Store, as far as what you might find here.  I write poetry and recently found a lot of poems I wrote while our children were growing up, and a lot of them are worth reading.  I also love cooking, and although I don't really measure things when I'm cooking, I will attempt to put measurements down for your convenience.  I may post a poem and a recipe, I may just talk about things going on in my life at present, or a story I wrote when I was taking correspondence courses with the Institute of Children's Literature.  I finally did get my diploma, but in the busy scheme of my life before I retired, I didn't put it to use.  Now I have all the time in the world and if I find one that I think is particularly good, you may find that here as well.  I am not as fluent a writer as my husband, and I may not have such a variety of things to talk about.  Nonetheless, I will attempt to entertain, amuse, and just chat about things in general.

When our children were young, my youngest didn't like to sleep in complete darkness, so we put night-lights up.  She also had night's when she'd be afraid and she'd come to sleep with my husband and myself.  I was thinking about it one day and I wrote a poem for her while I was at work.  It goes as follows:

                                                  Shadows

Such a shadow just ahead of me!
                                What can it be?

Shall I run to see?  Or shall I flee the
                                shadows?

Closer it comes...  Is it stalking me?
                                A stranger it must be.

What?  Rain has begun to fall on me!
Now I see!  The shadow was but a
                                cloud passing by.

And I feared for naught.   Once the
shadow passes, the rain falls, but
                                the sun shines once more.

Shadows are but clouds passing by.
After each one, and there are many,
                                the sun will come again.

So little daughter, fear the shadows no
more.  They are only clouds passing over.

The blue waits for you...just beyond that
                                cloud!

Another very short one of my poems that I like has no title, but I'll put one on here that seems to fit the bill:

                                             Confusion

Should I offend you by my sometimes
                                sudden bursts of confusion, consider...
You no doubt also have confusion.
                                Always hidden, griefs never aired,
                                dreams never shared...confusion.

The mirror of the dreams of the soul
...in need of cleaning, so the dreams
                                can clearly shine.

What is confusion to you, are merely
                                dreams of mine!

The other night I was pondering what to fix for dinner, and the recipe that follows is what I came up with on the spur of the moment.  It turned out to be great, so this is one of my own, from scratch, recipes.

Ingredients:      Tilapia (Or your favorite white fish)
                             Apple Cider Vinegar (1 tbsp)
                             Dried Basil (1 tsp)
                             Dried Thyme (1 tsp)
                             Margarine (1 tbsp)
                             Liquid Smoke (to your liking)

Directions:        Melt margarine in medium skillet
                          Add apple cider vinegar
Dry fish with paper towel & set aside
Add basil and thyme to margarine
Add as many filets as you need and brown lightly
                           on each side.
Add liquid smoke to each fillet in qty desired, but
I usually put a cap full on each fillet
Cook till fish flakes with fork and serve with
                           steamed broccoli in melted margarine

Hope you find something here to your liking, and if you do, let me know by just leaving a brief comment and I'll be sure to add more of what pleases you.

For now, enjoy and I wish you good fortune in the New Year!

The Reason

Just the other day, my husband had to have a medical procedure done and while they were doing it, I had time to reflect on a lot of things.  My husband is one wonderful person and that's something you just have to take my word for.  Over the years he has spent a fortune on me, bought me beautiful things, helped me with problems, took over many aspects of my responsibilities, and is always willing to lend a helping hand.  Well, as I was thinking about all of this,  I decided that I would make more of an effort on the home front, and clean things up a bit and take better care of the beautiful things he has provided for my enjoyment over the years.

So, yesterday I got busy and decided to attack my closet first.  I pulled out 2 tubs of personal papers, poetry and reading material, and short stories I once wrote for children when I was a student at The Institute of Children's Literature.  I found tears running down my face because these poems were written when I was around 28 years of age, and had just met Jack.  He turned my whole world around and the happiness I found just being with him, was incredible.  I would lie awake at night while he was sleeping and just be so happy and full of joy that I didn't want to close my eyes, for fear that it might all disappear while I was asleep and that I'd wakeup and find myself alone once again.  But that didn't happen, and by the 1st month of knowing him, I couldn't have imagined what it would be like to ever be alone again.

I've always enjoyed writing, especially poetry, and the love my husband gave me, and the happiness we shared, had to be expressed.  I found the poetry helped me to express the deeper aspects of my personality and it was a great outlet for me.  This is one that I particularly like, and I want to share it with any readers that might stumble upon my House Mouse blog.  I hope you find some meaning in it and if nothing else, just a little something to make you go "hmmmmm".

                                                                    The Reason

There is a reason for everything,
                                                        a reason for snow,
                                                        a reason for spring.

A reason for water to run
                                                        downhill,
a reason for lakes to lay
                                                        quiet and still.

A reason for joy and also
                                                        for pain,
                                                        a reason for sad hearts
                                                        to smile once again.

                                                        Sometimes the reasons are
                                                        harder to find, and often
there's not even the tiniest sign.

                                                        But even in wondering what
                                                        the reason might be,
for the things that happen to
                                                        you and to me,

                                                        We find not an answer
                                                        and so then we must
                                                        continue on blindly and
                                                        we learn how to trust,

                                                        A higher authority,
                                                        a bigger design,
and though we don't know it,
                                                        true reason we find!

For those of you who are having a hard time, and don't know the reason,  sometimes the only thing you can do is just "keep on keeping on," and trust that the outcome will be something you never thought of.  But then, my optimism knows no bounds.  I try to always believe in a higher, more benevolent creator than people give him credit for.  It's not always easy to understand why, but there truly is a reason, and as the years roll by, you find it.  Always look for the rainbow....the promise of a new day, a better day, and perhaps you'll get lucky, like I did.  My rainbow walks on 2 legs and gives me such love, that I too have found the reasons why I suffered for so many years.  The rewards have been many.  Keep looking.......
